If you lost your IP PIN or didn't receive a new one in the mail, you need to obtain your IP PIN before you can e-file your return. There are two primary methods to retrieve or reissue your IP PIN:

  1. Online Retrieval:
    • Use the "Get an IP PIN" online tool available on IRS.gov. If you don’t already have an account on IRS.gov, you will need to register for an account and validate your identity. If you previously created an account, you can access the "Get an IP PIN" tool and log in to your account. You may be required to verify your identity again due to increased account security.
  2. Phone Assistance:
    • If you are unable to retrieve your IP PIN online, you can call the IRS at 800-908-4490 for specialized assistance. This service is available Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time (Alaska and Hawaii follow Pacific Time). An assistor will verify your identity and mail your IP PIN to your address of record within 21 days.

It is important to retrieve your IP PIN to confirm your identity on any return filed during the current calendar year, including current year returns as well as any delinquent tax returns.
