When you e-file your tax return, you must sign it electronically using a Personal Identification Number (PIN). There are two primary methods for signing your electronic tax return: the Self-Select PIN method and the Practitioner PIN method.

  1. Self-Select PIN Method:
    • This method allows you to create your own five-digit PIN (any combination except all zeros) to sign your return.
    • If you are filing jointly, both you and your spouse must create and enter your own PINs.
    • Your electronic return is considered validly signed when it includes your PIN, last name, date of birth, and either your prior year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) or prior year PIN for authentication.
    • If you have been issued an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), you must include it in the designated spaces for your electronic signature to be complete.
    • This method is completely paperless, and there is no need to mail any forms, including Forms W-2.
  2. Practitioner PIN Method:
    • This method is used when you authorize a tax practitioner (an Electronic Return Originator or ERO) to enter or generate your PIN.
    • You must complete and sign Form 8879, IRS e-file Signature Authorization, which allows the ERO to enter your PIN on your behalf.
    • The Practitioner PIN method does not require your prior year AGI or prior year PIN for authentication.
    • The ERO can either input the PIN you choose or generate one for you, and you must review and sign the completed Form 8879.

Additionally, if your return includes certain forms that cannot be electronically filed, you must submit a paper Form 8453, U.S. Individual Income Tax Transmittal for an IRS e-file Return, to attach those documents.

In summary, you can sign your e-filed tax return using either the Self-Select PIN method by creating your own PIN or the Practitioner PIN method by authorizing your tax practitioner to enter your PIN. Both methods ensure that your electronic signature is valid and your return is properly authenticated.
