To notify the IRS of a change of address, you have several options:

  1. Form 8822: You can use Form 8822, Change of Address, to notify the IRS of your new address. This form should be mailed to the IRS Service Center that serves your old address. If you are changing a business address, use Form 8822-B.
  2. Tax Return: If you change your address before filing your tax return, you can write the new address in the appropriate boxes on your tax return when you file.
  3. Written Notification: You can send a signed written statement to the IRS. This statement should include your full name, old and new addresses, and your Social Security number (SSN), Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), or Employer Identification Number (EIN). Mail this statement to the address where you filed your last return.
  4. Oral Notification: You can notify the IRS in person or by telephone. You will need to verify your identity and the address the IRS has on file for you. Be prepared to provide your full name, old and new addresses, date of birth, and SSN, ITIN, or EIN. The IRS may request additional information to verify your identity.
  5. U.S. Postal Service (USPS): Any new address you provide to the USPS may also update your address of record on file with the IRS based on what the USPS retains in its National Change of Address (NCOA) database. However, it is recommended to notify the IRS directly as not all post offices forward government checks.
  6. Online Account: Through the Profile Page within your online IRS account, you can update your mailing address.

It is important to include your SSN (and the name and SSN of your spouse if you filed a joint return) in any correspondence with the IRS. If you are expecting a refund, also notify the post office serving your old address to help in forwarding your check to your new address unless you chose direct deposit of your refund.

For changes of address relating to an employment tax return, the IRS will issue confirmation notices (Notices 148A and 148B) for the change to both the new and former address. It can generally take four to six weeks after receipt for a change of address request to fully process.
